If you are to access the BCNI server system from a Windows-based environment you would need several applications on your Windows system (these are not needed on your space on the BCNI server). Please click on the links below (stating the names of the applications) to go to their respective download webpages.
1. PuTTY - a free Windows software that implements Telnet (bidirectional interactive text-oriented communication facility using a virtual terminal connection) and SSH (network protocol for secure data communication, remote shell services or command execution and other secure network services between two networked computers that it connects via a secure channel over an insecure network).
PuTTY is necessary for initiating the login into your VNC desktop on the BCNI server if the Windows machine you are using is outside the BCNI firewall (anywhere apart from the BCNI ground floor offices on the Downing Site).
If you are not sure how to use PuTTY you can find help here.
2. VNCViewer - enables a remote access to another system that contains a VNCserver (such as the BCNI server). It provides a GUI within a Windows environment for an easier usage of the applications within the BCNI server.
3. WinSCP - enables file transfer between a local computer (your PC) and a remote computer (a machine connected to the BCNI server). The functionality of file management is also provided with WinSCP.
Please remember your obligations under the Data Protection Act when transferring data outside the BCNI firewall.
